Commonwealth Trust

Virtual Infrastructure Provides Cost Effective Small Business Continuity

The Client

Commonwealth Trust Company provides a broad range of trustee related services, including serving as administrative trustee for various types of personal trusts, advisory trust positions, and administrative trustee for businesses not located in Delaware.

The Business Need

Regulatory requirements mandate that Commonwealth Trust Company must provide full disaster recovery and business continuity within their data environment. A solution was required that would assure that their data would be available quickly in the event of a local fault or failure. As a small business enterprise, Commonwealth Trust desired to accomplish this objective as economically as possible while guaranteeing that the solution satisfied regulatory requirements.

The Solution

Diamond Technologies provided consulting services for the architecture and implementation of Commonwealth Trust's business continuity solution based on VMware software products. The solution proposed and delivered by Diamond Technologies included implementing a single VMware ESX server to be hosted at an offsite location. All of the local physical systems Commonwealth Trust housed internally would be cloned as virtual machines and copied to the remote location. In addition, the solution included a real-time replication product to keep their data synchronized and up-to-date. Daily tape backups are being utilized to guard against any risk of data corruption and loss.

Business Impact

Commonwealth Trust was able to successfully meet their strict regulatory requirements for business continuity and disaster recovery. An analysis of the total cost of ownership (TCO) estimates that the virtual infrastructure provided in this solution results in a ROI of 143.6% over a 3-year period based on the initial investment. From an environmental standpoint, the virtual infrastructure results in a reduction of 37,652 lbs (17 tons) of carbon emissions, equivalent to the average emissions of taking 3 cars off the road per year.*
