State of the Art Exchange System
The mission of the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is to provide a safe, efficient, and environmentally sensitive transportation network that offers a variety of convenient and cost-effective choices for the movement of people and goods.
DelDOT builds, maintains, supports, and operates public roads, bridges, and rail crossings, transit shelters, and commuter parking lots throughout Delaware. They also support and operate a statewide public transportation system and provide for air and rail planning and are responsible for the licensing of all drivers within the State of Delaware as well as titling and registering of all motor vehicles and providing driver-improvement programs. When making choices and setting priorities, DelDOT works closely with local governments, regional planning organizations, as well as state and civic leaders.
Delaware's Department of Transportation was faced with the challenges most large organizations encounter - the need to operationally integrate a large number of applications and databases that were developed over a long period of time using a wide variety of technologies. In most cases, the applications themselves were providing a high degree of value to the organization. Yet, organizational effectiveness was hampered by the lack of application interoperability and by "enterprise level" information, reporting, and analysis.
Diamond Technologies provided a leading edge solution to this two-fold challenge of application interoperability and the need for enterprise data integration. Diamond Technologies' solution centered on the development of EDEE (pronounced "Eddie"); an Enterprise Data Exchange Engine developed by Diamond Technologies for DelDOT. EDEE is a highly scalable, fault tolerant, messaging-based integration engine.
Unlike most commercial message broker products, the EDEE architecture incorporates an integrated operational data store, which is used to store and manage enterprise level information. In addition to providing high volume message transport via the EDEE engine, the integrated operational data store provides the ability for executive decision making that was virtually impossible with DelDOT's previous "stove pipe" application environment.
